Scheduling Issues in ECOFRAME Optical Packet Switched Ring

چکیده
In the metropolitan area, traditional SONET/SDH circuit switched rings are likely to be replaced with optical packet/burst switching technologies. In this paper we consider a slotted WDM optical packet ring operating without resource reservation mechanisms. In such rings, optical packets in transit have priority over traffic to be inserted by the node. Packets to be inserted are thus queued according to their destination, in order to avoid headof-line blocking. We focus on scheduling policies and compare several MaxWeight scheduling policies, including Oldest Packet First (OPF) which emulates FIFO queueing while avoiding head-of-line blocking. We show that there is a trade-off between implementation complexity and fairness, and identify the Largest Virtual Waiting Time First (LVWTF) scheduling policy as presenting both a low complexity and a good fairness performance.

متن کاملArchitecture and Design Issues of an Optical Burst Switched Network Testbed
In this paper, we report a testbed employing optical burst switching technology. The network model and node architecture are introduced. The key design issues, including burst format, burst assembly and channel scheduling, are discussed.
متن کاملQuality of service differentiation, teletraffic analysis and network layer packet redundancy in optical packet switched networks
A crucial issue in optical packet switched (OPS) networks is packet losses at the network layer caused by contentions. This paper presents the network layer packet redundancy scheme (NLPRS), which is a novel approach to reduce the end-to-end data packet loss rate in OPS networks. By introducing redundancy packets in the OPS network, the NLPRS enables a possible reconstruction of data packets th...
متن کاملMerit Based Scheduling in Asynchronous Bufferless Optical Packet Switched Networks
This paper describes how Merit Based Scheduling (MBS) can be used to increase the average throughput in an asynchronous bufferless Optical Packet Switched (OPS) network. Basically, MBS means that packets are forwarded based on its merit, which includes priority, number of resources taken, number of resources left etc. We show that using MBS increases the average throughput, but only in a limite...
متن کاملFLAMINGO: A Packet-switched IP over WDM Metro Optical Network
We present a network architecture of an all-optical wavelength-and-time-slotted Metropolitan Optical Network. A couple of important aspects of this architecture include all-optical packet switching and the ability to put IP packets directly over WDM. Since the FLAMINGO network has a ring topology we focus on issues such as chromatic dispersion and network synchronisation and suggest ways and me...
